US Lifts Restrictions on Cuban Travel
Today, the US Treasury and Commerce Departments issued new rules regarding trade and travel to Cuba going into effect Friday, January 16, 2015.
Cross Cultural Journeys applauds the Obama Administration’s move to normalize diplomatic relations with Cuba and ease some restrictions on trade and travel.
These new regulations will open up the long-forbidden island to greater US travel. Some restrictions will still apply and US tourists may still find it difficult to book flights or arrange accommodations in Cuba.
What do these new rules mean for American tourists? Can anyone travel to Cuba now?
Yes and No. American citizens will be able to access Cuba on a general license issued by the US government as long as they meet the requirements of one of twelve specified travel categories in the new regulations linked above.
Should I plan my own trip or still consider going through a company such as CCJF?
“In the 16 years CCJF has been involved in Cuba, we’ve built lifelong friendships and relationships that provide us access to speakers, hotels, and community organizations that are not available to the average traveler,” says Carole Angermeir, Founder of the Cross Cultural Journeys Foundation. “These local connections are the reason why individuals, who normally would not choose to travel with a group, have been happy they chose to travel with Cross Cultural Journeys. With these changes in travel regulations we are excited to continue to offer these unique opportunities to our travelers.”
Why travel to Cuba now?
Today’s announcement brings inevitable change. Cuba will no longer remain the country it has been over the past half century – relatively untouched by the American dollar.
By traveling in the coming months you will be able to witness the final days of an era in a country that has charted its own course for over five decades, unravaged by excessive tourism.
