POSTPONED: Founder’s Series Journey to Ethiopia – Feb 1-13, 2017

UPDATE 10/11/2016: Unfortunately, we have decided to postpone this trip temporarily, due to concerns about the security situation on the ground, particularly in southern Ethiopia where protesters and government forces have clashed recently over land-use conflicts. Tourists have not been targeted by either side. However, we feel it’s prudent not to go there at this time. We are monitoring the situation closely and will reschedule it as soon as we feel it’s safe to do so. Please stay tuned.

This winter, Cross Cultural Journeys founder Carole Angermeir will lead a trip to the timeless and mystical land of Ethiopia. This is one of Carole’s favorite destinations! There are still a few spaces left on this exciting Founder’s Series journey February 1-13, 2017.

Carole and her husband Wilford Welch, a former diplomat, have been leading trips to Ethiopia since 1991. They know the country intimately and have many close friends there. The Cross Cultural Journeys Foundation funded its first grantee partner there in 1997, a cooperative tea house owned by a group of women in southern Ethiopia. Since then, Cross Cultural Journeys has returned many times, and maintains close relationships with many local organizations.
If you are looking for a specialized adventure, join our small group for an insider’s view of this ancient and beautiful country. You’ll visit the historical north, where you’ll see the magnificent underground churches of Lalibela, hewn by hand from solid rock, and the lush islands and reed churches of Lake Tana, headwaters of the Blue Nile.

In the south, Carole and Wilford will introduce you to the tribal peoples of the Omo Valley, one of East Africa’s least-touched areas. We will visit the villages and markets of the Arbore, Hamar, Tsemay, Ari and Male people and witness their beautiful traditional ceremonies, a side of these cultures that few Westerners get to see. Near Turmi, we will cruise Lake Chamo with its stunning wildlife, before heading back to the bustling capital of Addis Ababa.
Join us as we explore this fascinating country, witness its magnificent natural beauty, and learn about the diverse traditions and cultures of its peoples.
