Join Maria Cook and Journeys for Deep Healing to journey into a part of Mexico where tourists never go. We will sit at the feet of curanderas, participate in unique rituals, be exposed to traditional medicine, explore the ruins that speak of the wisdom and knowledge of the ancient people, enjoy the art, food, and culture of Oaxaca city, hike in the mountains, pick wild botanicals, support local ecotourism companies, visit bustling markets and villages renowned for craftsmanship and artisanal excellence, stay together in the home of a curandera deep in the dry jungle of the coffee country and open ourselves to the magic and medicine that is Oaxaca.
We will travel together in a small group using fabulous local guides. We will follow a carefully planned itinerary, designed to maximize your enjoyment. You will love the beautiful places we stay and the amazing food. This is a world-class trip offered on a very local level to a small intimate group. The group container and the stimulation of the traditional culture will help us absorb meaningful insights and reenergize on a deep level. Daily Itinerary
Day 1| Wednesday, February 21| Oaxaca You will arrive at the small airport in the state of Oaxaca and transfer to the hotel. Dinner on your own, and time to explore the city. Hotel Un Sueño Valle de Huajes.
Day 2 | Thursday, February 22 | Oaxaca We start the day with a beautiful gratitude and welcome ceremony with an introduction to traditional Mexican medicine. After lunch, visit the archeological site of Monte Alban. Dinner on your own. Hotel Un Sueño (B,L)
Day 3 | Friday, February 23 | Oaxaca In the morning we visit indigenous and handicraft villages, as well as the market in Ocotlan de Morelos. Lunch at Azucena Zapoteca. After lunch visit the home of an internationally renowned curandera, Doña Queta, for conversation and a demonstration of a limpia (ritual cleansing). Dinner on your own. Un Sueño (B,L)
Day 4 | Saturday, February 24 | Oaxaca/Cuajimoloyas Today we head out on a field trip to the northern Sierra, to the mountain village of Cuajimoloyas. There we will enjoy a botanical walk and visit the home of a local curandera. Return to the city for dinner on your own. Un Sueño (B,L)

Day 5 | Sunday, February 25 | Oaxaca/Teotitlan del Valle In the morning we visit the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua, a stunning natural formation where we will have the opportunity to enjoy a ritual cleansing and a swim. On the way back we visit the rugs and candle makers in the handicraft village of Teotitlan del Valle. Hotel Un Sueño (B,L)
Day 6 | Monday, February 26|Oaxaca Morning free to explore the incredible city of Oaxaca. Options include: Shopping, a professional massage, a chocolate tour with Chris, cacao expert (this includes a lot of chocolate and food and is open 9AM - 2PM), visit the ethnobotanical garden of Oaxaca (about 2 hours), museums and art galleries. After lunch on your own, we start our journey to the Pacific coast at 3PM. Driving time: 2.5 hours. Enjoy a dinner together when we reach our destination. Day 7 | Tuesday, February 27 | Oaxaca/ El Mamey After a delicious breakfast at the beach we travel for about 4.5 hours up into the jungle mostly on an endless dirt road. Upon reaching the community of El Mamey, we will be staying together, en famille, in a private family home at the coffee plantation also called El Mamey. There will be cozy basic accommodations with shared rooms and bathrooms outside. There is no heated water, but the warm climate provides plenty of comfort. We will share lovely family style meals and enjoy the hospitality of the family. Elizabeth, a profoundly wise and gifted healer, will give a presentation of her style of treatment. We will explore the grounds including a walk/hike along the river to take a swim in a natural pool, accompanied by birds, jungle noises, and the sound of the water tumbling over the rocks. Day 8 | Wednesday, February 28| El Mamey Our second day at El Mamey will include options. We can tour the coffee plantation, hike through the jungle with swimming opportunities in the pristine river and waterfalls, yoga class. Elizabeth will lead group work and private consultation. Her ceremonies and rituals use natural elements, designed to touch us deeply and help us to move out of old patterns into an awareness of the magic that surrounds us. In the afternoon, we can walk/hike to a nearby waterfall. Later in the evening, we will gather together again as a group, to share a dinner. El Mamey (B/L/D)
Day 9 | Thursday, March 1 | El Mamey On our final day we will participate in a variety of activities including cooking class with Doña Matilde in the traditional kitchen, and group work with Elizabeth. In the evening we will experience the wonder of a Full Moon Celebration! El Mamey (B/L/D)
Day 10 | Friday, March 2 | Huatulco / Home Transfer to Huatulco airport OR continue on the Optional Beach Program to the Pacific coastal beaches of San Agustinillo (3 hours) (B)

Beach Extension: This program will include early morning ocean trip in motorboat to likely see whales, turtles, birds, dolphins, etc, and explore the rock formations of the coast. Will include opportunity to explore the lagoon at La Ventinilla. Other excursions also. March 2-5, at Pacific Beach and San Augustinillo, all breakfasts included.

Journey Leader
Maria Cook EAMP, Lac, LMT is a licensed acupuncturist and body worker. She has worked with alternative medicine and personal transformation for over 25 years, has studied extensively in Mexico, China, Taiwan and elsewhere, and appreciates many modalities. As a USCG licensed captain, she has led adventure travel expeditions aboard her charter sailboat in the Caribbean, taught seamanship for Outward Bound, and served as a watch leader on the schooner Adventures teaching environmental education. She has led Women’s Transformational Journeys, both kayak camping and in open boats, rowing and sailing. Her passion is to combine empowering experiences in nature, the power of alternative healing and traditional medicine, and the capacity of group work to heal and transform.
