Case Study: JazzArts Charlotte's Trip to Havana, Cuba
Jan 28 - Feb 3

A Little About JazzArts Charlotte and Their Partnership with CCJ
JazzArts Charlotte is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, education, and performance of jazz music. Through innovative programming, community outreach, and world-class performances, JazzArts Charlotte fosters a deep appreciation for jazz as an art form while nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Purpose of the Trip
As part of its mission to expand cultural exchange and musical collaboration, JazzArts Charlotte has developed a strong partnership with Cross Cultural Journeys. This partnership aims to connect JazzArts Charlotte members with jazz musicians in Cuba, share music, and learn about Cuba's rich cultural and culinary make-up, creating opportunities for artists and students to engage deeply with the vibrant traditions of jazz in both countries. The trip also gave travelers an opportunity to connect with the Cuban people and experience their true resiliency amidst a political and economic crisis.
Activities and Experiences
1. Musical Collaborations: JazzArts Charlotte musicians got a chance to visit Amadeo Roldán Music Conservatory, where they enjoyed a spectacular private performance by Cuban youth music students. Participants played and collaborated with local students that included some of the best in the world.
2. Understanding Cuba's Spiritual Heritage: JazzArts Charlotte participants had the rare opportunity to visit a Babalawo, a high priest of Santería, an Afro-Cuban religion deeply embedded in Cuban culture. Welcomed into his home, they learned about the history, teachings, and spiritual significance of Santería, gaining insight into a fundamental yet often overlooked aspect of Cuban life.
3. Cultural Immersion: Beyond the music, participants had the chance to explore Havana’s rich cultural heritage, visiting iconic jazz clubs such as Zorra y el Cuervo, historic landmarks, and engaging with the local community.
Impact and Takeaways
The trip strengthened JazzArts Charlotte’s commitment to international collaboration and jazz education. Musicians returned inspired by Cuba’s dynamic jazz scene, and new relationships were formed that will shape future music. The exchange reinforced the universal power of jazz to connect people across borders and highlighted the importance of ongoing cultural dialogue.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this trip, JazzArts Charlotte and CCJ are exploring further opportunities for collaboration. This was JazzArts Charlotte 4th trip to Cuba and we look forward to this trip every year.
